Our Story
The 41 Hawthorn brand was launched in 2010 by designers Claire McPherson and Joanna Hill. Claire and Joanna met while studying fashion design in college and quickly bonded over their shared love of clothing that combined functionality with feminine style. After graduating, the duo set up a small studio in Claire’s garage and began creating their first collection. They came up with the name “41 Hawthorn” based on the street address of their humble headquarters.
Despite their DIY beginnings, Claire and Joanna had an incredibly clear vision for the 41 Hawthorn aesthetic. They wanted to design polished, put-together pieces that still felt lively and youthful. Their very first collection featured tailored blazers, softly draped blouses, and whimsical printed dresses – all in a refined color palette of neutrals and pale pastels.
The debut 41 Hawthorn line was an instant success. Claire and Joanna’s attention to detail and fit won over customers who were looking for sophisticated clothing that didn’t skimp on comfort. Within two years, the brand expanded beyond the garage studio into a larger production facility and opened its first boutique.
Today, 41 Hawthorn is beloved by women across the country for clothing that seamlessly transitions from day to night. While the brand has grown, Claire and Joanna remain actively involved in designing each seasonal collection. They find inspiration in vintage styles, fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn, and everyday moments. Above all, their goal is to create pieces that make women look as radiant on the outside as they feel on the inside.
Our Design Philosophy
The 41 Hawthorn design philosophy balances timeless elegance with wearable ease. We aim to produce pieces that are feminine, flattering, and unfussy – clothing you can confidently wear anywhere.
Our design process begins with selecting luxe, high-quality fabrics in a neutral palette of black, white, beige, and gray. We love working with materials like breezy silk, substantial knits, and rich Italian cotton. These fabrics provide the foundation for silhouettes that are polished yet relaxed.
Our blouses feature details like gently puffed sleeves, tie necklines, and smocked bodices. We love experimenting with romantic accents like ruffles and lace while still ensuring our tops can transition seamlessly from day to night.
Our dresses are designed with an eye towards flattering the feminine figure. We use subtle gathers, wrap silhouettes, and shapely seam lines to create styles that are elegant, comfortable, and easy to wear.
Our suiting combines classic tailoring with modern details for blazers and trousers that feel sharp yet versatile. Jackets feature streamlined cuts and satin linings, while pants include functional pockets and curve-hugging fits.

Our Commitment to Quality
At 41 Hawthorn, we are unwavering in our commitment to quality craftsmanship. Each and every piece is designed and produced to stand the test of time.
We source the best fabrics available, working closely with mills in Europe, Japan, and Italy. Our materials are selected for their ability to maintain their beauty and durability with wash and wear. Nature fibers like linen, cotton, and silk make up the majority of our cloth options.
Garments are constructed using expert techniques like darts, princess seams, and French seams for a perfect fit. Our in-house team oversees production every step of the way so no detail goes unnoticed.
We also partner with ethical factories that provide fair wages and condition for workers. The vast majority of our production takes place in the United States, reducing our environmental impact through shorter supply chains.
The result is timeless pieces made to the highest standards. Our designs feature meticulous construction that allow them to become treasured additions to your closet. 41 Hawthorn through the Years
Though 41 Hawthorn got its start in a small Los Angeles garage, the brand has grown leaps and bounds while staying true to its original vision. We’re proud to recount some of the most exciting developments in the 41 Hawthorn story.
2011: Our first boutique opens in the Abbot Kinney neighborhood in Venice, California. The intimate space allows us to connect directly with customers.
2013: We expand our offerings into workwear with a debut collection of office-ready blazers, trousers, and shift dresses. The working woman instantly embraces these polished yet practical pieces.
2015: Our growing team moves into a new 20,000 square foot headquarters and design studio in Culver City, California.
2016: We launch e-commerce, making our collections available to women across the US. Our online store now accounts for over 30% of sales.
2018: 41 Hawthorn is worn by stars like Emily Blunt, Jessica Alba, and Kerry Washington, cementing our place in the fashion zeitgeist.
2020: In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we begin producing cotton face masks featuring our signature prints. We donate 10% of proceeds to charities supporting frontline workers.
2021: We expand into handbags and shoes with a line of impeccably crafted purses and heels that complement our ready-to-wear.
2022: 41 Hawthorn celebrates over a decade in business! We now ship to over 15 countries worldwide and employ a team of 50 talented professionals.

Claire McPherson, Co-Founder and Creative Director
Claire oversees all aspects of design from initial concept to final sample. She works closely with the design team to ensure each collection embodies the 41 Hawthorn aesthetic. Claire finds constant inspiration in art, vintage fashion, and observing how real women dress and move through the world.
Joanna Hill, Co-Founder and Brand Director
As brand director, Joanna focuses on the high-level vision for 41 Hawthorn. She works on developing partnerships, planning marketing strategy, and ensuring our message resonates with customers. Joanna is an expert on identifying new opportunities for growing the brand while preserving our core values.
Eva Chen, Head Designer
Eva manages the design team and helps bring each seasonal collection to life. She has an incredible eye for color, proportion, and fit. Eva enjoys the collaborative nature of the design process and how each team member contributes their skills to creating beautiful, functional clothing.
James Wu, Production Manager
With over 20 years of experience, James oversees our supply chain and manufacturing. He works closely with our ethical factories to translate designs into high-quality finished garments. James’s eye for detail ensures that each piece meets our stringent standards.
Nina Fairchild, Retail Manager
As retail manager, Nina makes sure that the shopping experience in our boutiques and online is exceptional from start to finish. She hires and trains our talented store associates to provide best-in-class customer service. Nina also oversees visual merchandising across all sales channels.
Rachel Lim, Customer Service Lead
Rachel heads up our customer service team, who are available 7 days a week to answer questions, provide style recommendations, and resolve any issues. Rachel ensures that each interaction is positive by empowering her team to make customers happy. She truly enjoys helping women find their perfect fit and discover new favorite pieces.
